This Cat’s Tale

“This car was originally purchased by H. Clay Earls, who founded Martinsville Speedway, a short track in southwestern Virginia that has hosted NASCAR Cup Series races every year since the division’s inception in 1949. He bought the car for his daughter, who said it was her favorite car and drove it through her college years.

I purchased the car in 2019. It had been previously owned for many years by Delmarva Cougar Club member Erin Monfort. I did not purchase it from her, but from the buyer she sold it to. The car was very solid for an East Coast car.

I rebuilt the engine and transmission; replaced the power windows with updated motors; and replaced the lower back glass window channel, which was rusted out, due to the vinyl top. That was the worst rust issue I encountered on the car. I also replaced the vinyl top and repainted the car Wimbledon White, which was the car’s original color. I do all my own work, except engine machining.

The car runs and drives great. I drive it often, including to a lot of shows. I have two ’69 cougars, and this is my favorite of them.”

Notes

Tom, a lifelong resident of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, has a couple other stablemates for his Wimbledon White Cougar: another ’69 cat (S-code orange Eliminator tribute car) and a 1965 Pontiac GTO. He says that if he’s not wrenching on his cars, he’s often busy working on other people’s vehicles.
